How to calculate roofing squares and shingles
Roofing is measured in squares— one square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. To estimate a job you need the roof's footprint, its pitch (slope), and a waste allowance for cuts, ridges, and valleys.
The formula
Roof area = footprint (length × width) × pitch multiplier. A steeper pitch adds surface area — a 6:12 roof adds about 12% over a flat footprint, and a 12:12 roof adds about 41%. Divide the total area by 100 to get squares, then add 10–15% for waste.
Worked example
A 40 ft × 30 ft home (1,200 sq ft footprint) with a 6:12 pitch: 1,200 × 1.12 = 1,344 sq ft, or 13.4 squares. Add 10% waste → about 14.8 squares. At three bundles of shingles per square, that's roughly 45 bundles.
